Completed rehabilitation of Runway 15-33 including partial depth milling (185,294 m2), crack repairs, hot mix asphalt paving (34,124t) , new pavement markings and replacement of existing Runway 15 SSALR system complete with new LED approach lights, support structures, footings, raceways, cables, pulpits and isolating transformers.
Runway 15-33 is the main runway at London Airport. Construction was staged to accommodate airport traffic including a 96 hour closure of the runway intersection. Worked within Airfield security restrictions.
Project designed to be completed in seven stages. Before construction started Airport Authority asked us to see if we could change staging to meet requirements of a 7,000 ft runway so the Airport would not lose revenue from one of their largest Commercial Carriers. We were able to brainstorm with the Airport Authority and Consulting Engineer to revise staging to five stages and meet the timelines to have a 7000 ft runway completed by June 30th. Another key challenge was to meet the strict crossfall tolerances for the runway. Existing conditions were surveyed and milling depths were calculated and marked on pavement prior to milling. All asphalt milling was completed to profile grade to ensure design elevations were met with a constant asphalt thickness placed. Worked in conjunction with ongoing training school flights accessing taxiways and second runway
